Wishing you a very Happy Diwali!!

I am seeing Happy Diwali messages everywhere. Emails, Facebook status, in person greetings, phone calls, they are everywhere. For those of us who are away from home, the Facebook status usually reads something like, Jessica is "Wishing everyone a Happy Diwali and a Happy New Year …… and is missing home". Missing home? I am sure you do Jessica. I am definitely missing home myself. So why would we miss home so much today?

Diwali is celebrated for 3/4 days and the number of days very year to year. I guess, most people celebrate the second day of Diwali but for me, the memories of the first day are most cherished.

I just thought of reflecting back on what Diwali was like back then, back when I was a kid.

I used to get two new pairs of clothes every year. First on my birthday and the second time, on Diwali. This was one of the main reasons why I used to wait eagerly for Diwali. New set of clothes. I remember how I used to go shopping for clothes to Goyal Shopping Center and the other stores around Borivali station. I still remember my mom bargaining for clothes and the expression on her face as she got money from her purse to pay the shopkeeper and told me "This time, we’ve bought you such expensive clothes, let’s not buy too may firecrackers". She really said that. I still remember the one time when, for a change, my dad took me clothes shopping and he actually bought me a Rs. 175 t-shirt. It was indeed the most expensive t-shirt I had ever bought and to top that my dad just said it was expensive and did not mention about cutting the expenses on firecrackers. I was so happy!! 🙂

After the clothes shopping was done, it was time for my mom to make us Diwali-snacks (faral is the Marathi word and the word Diwali-snacks can never bring the memories that the word faral brings). I used to "help" my mom make them. My job was basically to box the laddus and chakalis and sometimes to make chakalis. I helped her with the greed to eat some of those snacks while they were steaming hot. While I "helped" her, feasting on the sweets, snacks and my mom kept shaping the laddus from the steaming hot floor and shooing me away and telling me not to eat the as they will get over before Diwali. And many-a-times, they did and she made more. Yum! 🙂

Third thing that went into the preparations was shopping for firecrackers. I remember having all those discussions with my friends about which were the cool crackers that year. Haddi (my best friend) and me, we used to get Rs 100 each to shop for crackers. We had to decide on where to buy them from and what to buy. Rs 100 were never enough and we could never ever buy one of those fancy crackers. If we got lucky, we would get to go Rs 20 over the budget. 🙂 Once we got the crackers, we would divide them into 3/4 parts based on the number of Diwali days that year. We had separate bags for each day and we would usually try to save more for the last day. 🙂

Amongst all these exciting things to do in preparations, there were also some boring things we had to do, like, cleaning the house and putting up lights and the lantern. ha ha. It was difficult to climb on the stool and put those things up. Aah, let me talk about the exciting stuff now. 🙂

The first day of Diwali, was special. It’s called Pehli angol in Marathi, which means literally, "First bath". We had to get up before the sunrise. That was a big task for me usually as I would have usually had a sleepless night with the excitement of new clothes, crackers and all the faral. Once I woke, I had to take a bath with utna, which is a naturally scented powder. It dint really give a lot of fragrance but it did make me feel like I smelled good. I never had a deo or perfume ever then, this was the only day when I would "smell good". We used to crush a fruit called karit, which is more or less like a tiny cucumber and planted a seed or two like tilak on the forehead as part of the rituals. A small prayer and then was, the exciting part. Wearing new clothes and then family breakfast of the Diwali-snacks. For some reason my mom never really sat with us there to eat, she was always more busy making all the arrangements. I wish she joined. I dint really have to fight with my sisters for the Diwali snacks, lol, they just let me have more than my share. All this happened before the sunrise. Just about sunrise time, I would hear some firecrackers in the building. It was usually Prakash (pakya) who came out first and I would hear him calling everyone out and wishing Happy Diwali. By this time, I would usually lose interest in eating cos I would be too excited to go out and burst crackers and show off my new clothes. Haddi would have come to my place by now, else I would go get him and then it was firecrackers time. We would all look at each other’s clothes and some of us would boast about what crackers they have bought and some would talk about how cool their clothes were. It was all good fun, we would talk like it’s the greatest day of our lives, try to savor every moment of the day. In fact, it indeed was the best day of our life…. 🙂

I sure did miss all that, I miss my friends. I miss Chintu’s loud voice and Parag’s flashy clothes. I miss all the jokes I shared with Pappu, Viren, Varsoo, and others. Most of em all, I miss my family and I sure do miss all the new additions to my families – my neices and my nephew.

Here’s to wishing them and all you a very Happy Diwali, miss you all. Happy Diwali!!

Radiohead @ White River Amphitheatre ’08

Radiohead, one of my favourite bands, played at Whiteriver Amphitheater recently. Of course i went to see them…

Radiohead doesnt tour Seattle too often. It seems they last played here about 5 years ago. Given that and also the fact that they are probably one of the biggest bands out there today, the show was sold out. I bot my ticket in the presale. I still remember the flurry of emails at work on the day the tickets got released, and people comparing the seats they got with the ones others had. Well the pre-sale tickets were gone in minutes. There was huge excitement about the show.

Little later, RH released a live set of them playing In Rainbows songs. The performance was real tight and my excitement was only getting bigger. I couldnt wait to see the band play and especially, to see Thom sing.

There were about 15-20,000 tickets and they were all sold out. You could see the excitement just as you walked towards the venue. Yeah but the show, the show was disappointing and a total let down. Yes, thats how i felt.

Here is the setlist:
15 Step
Reckoner
Optimistic
There There
All I Need
Pyramid Song
Talk Show Host
The National Anthem
The Gloaming
Videotape
Lucky
Faust Arp
Jigsaw Falling Into Place
Climbing Up The Walls
Dollars and Cents
Nude
Bodysnatchers

Encore 1:
How to Disappear Completely
Arpeggi/Weird Fishes
Idioteque
In Limbo
Street Spirit

Encore 2:
You And Whose Army?
No Surprises
Everything In Its Right Place

First thing i felt was majorly wrong was the setlist. If you dont agree with me, then just create a playlist of that setlist and give it a listen. The songs werent mixed well at all. I mean, you cannot follow one slow song with another, and that with another one. Second was the playing, what happened to improvisation? I dint see much at all. Whats the fun in playing all the songs as is? Then i think they majorly miss the live element. I mean, shouldnt they be getting the crowd into the song and their performance? I dint see anyone of them do any of that. There was no introductions to the songs or talk abt their tour or anything, no nothing. It was like they were airing the show on a huge 3D screen in front of us. Damn. The other thing is I dont think Thom sang well at all. There was no zip, no soul in vocals barring a few songs. The stage was pretty and the lights were flashy but werent we going there for the music?

All right, the biggest disappointment for me was they screwup of "Faust Arp". The song was supposed to be played by Thom and Johnny. They start and then, there was a goof up. I think Thom missed something. They start again and guess what, they miss again. Then Thom starts playing "Tell me why" (neil young) which Johnny dint play. Thom takes a few steps back and then says "Fuck it" and continues the song from where they messed up. I think that was HIGHLY UN-PROFESSIONAL. First, they messed the song and they should be sorry abt it (ashamed?) instead of accepting that they say the F word? I felt that they dint care for the fans and then secondly, they think too highly of themselves. Probably i was the only one who was booing them at that point. Flea once said that he asks "Would Neil Young do this?" when in doubt. I think Thom should ask himself that question.

On a side note, the song is amazing and i just love the webcast version of the song.

I liked they way they finished the show. Each member walked out as their part in the song was over. Thom left first and Johnny left last and the music continued. I guess the message was the music will prevail even after they are gone. But guys, what about a bow together? Aah, from the biggest band of our times, i would expect way better. Next time Radiohead is in town, I will think twice before i get the tickets for sure.

PS: I think Whiteriver is the worst venue in Seattle. Unless i have to see someone, i will never go there again. It took me 4 hrs to get there and about 2 hrs just to get out of their 100m parking lot and another 2 hrs from there to get home. Thank god, I405 wasnt jam at night.

Nuno v/s Tom?

The new Extreme album will be released on coming Tuesday (their first album in 13 years). I was trying to get a sneak peak into what’s coming. I thought that i should check out their first single from the song and read a few reviews as well.

The song is available on their myspace and ultimate-guitar. The song is awesome and if you are a Extreme fan, its very special. I cant wait for the album. 4 more days to go. Woo.

As i was listening to the song, i looked at the reviews. One guy said the song sounded like "It’s Audioslave ripping off Pink Floyd" another guy saying "Nuno kicks Tom’s ass. A lot of people were drawing comparisons between Gary Cherone – Chris Cornell and Nuno Bettencourt – Tom Morello.

Why do people make comments like that? I wonder. I would be very careful about what i say and not make statements that i cannot defend. How can Extreme sound like Audioslave? Lol. I mean, what was that guy talking? Any Audioslave/Extreme fan would know that Extreme happened before Audioslave. Extreme released their last album in 1995 and Audioslave released their first album in 2000. Secondly, Tom Morello has often quoted that he is a big fan of Nuno. I once saw his interview in which he said he used to go to this local club in Boston to check Extreme (Nuno) play. Tom is influenced by Nuno and he accepts that. Yet, why say Nuno kicks Tom’s ass? Nuno is better technically and Tom is awesome for his sound and groovy riff’s and the energy he creates. Nuno isn’t Tom and Tom isn’t Nuno but they are both amazing players, with amazing attitude and can be role models for any rock guitarists.

My 2 cents: I think people should be very careful about what they write. They should verify facts before saying something. Secondly if they are fans of one band, it doesn’t mean that all other bands suck. If you like Nuno it doesn’t mean Tom is bad and vice versa. If you want to talk shit about someone, first go listen to their music. RATM rocks and so does Extreme and so does Audioslave. There are die hard fans of each of those bands. And its cool that the has been some influence rubbing between these guys and its so cool to see the respect these guys have for each other.

I am a huge fan of Nuno, Cherone, Tom and Chris. Huge fan, and i will always be. Thank you!!

PS: (1) I cant go to Charlotte to watch Extreme, Vikas had an extra ticket for me. Boo hoo hoo, and Extreme don’t play in Seattle, BOO HOO HOO.

(2) I have seen Tom Morello make everyone jump up and down a la-Rage Against the Machine audience with a acoustic guitar in hand. I cannot imagine anyone else i have heard doing that.

…and Derek Trucks playing at the age of 16

Posted in Uncategorized | Leave a comment

If there is a rock and roll heaven, i have been there already.

People always say that my generation has not seen or produced any great music. Nor did we get to see any of the class acts of the 70’s in the prime. But, we have this explosive guitar player called Derek Trucks. He can give anyone from the 70’s a run for their money. What a player.

I saw Derek last year at the Tulalip Casino in Seattle and that show was easily one of the best i have seen. A monster player he is. I went to WaMu theater with my hopes high but i wasnt thinking much about the show. I knew it would be awesome but, i wasnt thinking much.

Derek Trucks walked on the stage after Mike Mattison’s band finished their set. They started their set with a song called "Feels so bad". Derek played a solo, ofcourse a slide solo. And we were already witnessing the goodness. The third song was "Anyday" the Derek and the Dominos classis. Not the first time i saw him play that but, yeah but, he played it so freaking well. There was a LONG solo when the band almost stepped aside and with spot light on Derek as he moved each person off their feet. It has to be one of the very very best. Damn i cant say for sure it was the best – what the heck i just saw Knopfler play "Telegraph Road" and BB King play "Thrill Is Gone" and Al Di Meola play that acoustic solo (my eyes get moist even as i type that). Coming back to Anyday and Derek’s solo. I wish they recorded that performance. I wish i had a camera built inside of me that could capture the whole solo, as i saw it and i wish i can record the joy it brought. To be there and see him play. Thats probably as close to heaven as i will ever get. Well, If there is a rock and roll heaven, i have been there already. Everybody in the crowd was estatic, we all knew we had seen something special and we were all on our feet when he completed the song. Guess what the man does, he just takes a few steps behind, just looks at Susan as if nothing has happened – no eye contact with us and gets ready to play the next song. Lol, so much for one of the best i ever heard. That guy knows what good music is and he conducted the band really well.

After the show, i met Derek’s dad and his sister. His dad is a very very simple man and said with pride that that was his son playing. Understandably so. I had to tell him that, he is one of the best ever to which his dad said, "I may have a bias but i agree with you". His dad named Derek after the band "Derek and the Dominos" and Derek plays Duane’s style of slide guitar and he does a freakin amazing job. Yeah, and his dad also said that he felt that Derek was showing off today, lol, as some of his friends were around. On a sidenote, i wish i could have seen Duane Allman play.

These guys dint let the camera in, so no fancy pics. I took a few from the small camera and here is a link to em. And here is a video of Derek playing at the age of 12.

This has to be the summer of a lifetime for me. Its the Summer of 69 for someone who was born in the late 70’s. 🙂

Raising sand

I have watched some of my favourite acts play in the last one year and more so this summer. Neil Young, Johnny Winter, Derek Trucks, Knopfler, BB King, RTF, Radiohead (later this month), Jack Johnson (later this month again)… but ya.

All that apart, I AM GONG TO WATCH FREAKING ROBERT PLANT doing the Raising Sand tour with Alison Kraus. Wooo. Well – I just cannot control my excitement each time i think about Mr. Robert Plant crooning right in front of me, a few feet away. In flesh and blood. I cannot even count how many hours i have spent listening him singing. Led Zep has been my favourite band starting day one. And like an oldie (yeah, i feel i am old now) i would say that Zep really has changed my life. I dont know what i would have been doing today, in the evenings, in the summer, had it not been for those Zep records whch got me interested into music. I’ll be a zephead forever.

Even the thought of Plant singing in front of me gives me goose bumps today. Is this real or is this a dream? Tell me its real…

Wed, Oct 1, 2008 is the big day!

If you are interested, here are a few links to the setlists of previous shows of this tour:

Almost another hard disc crash

I am a quite a bit paranoid about my music and pictures collection. I use two external hard discs and I use one as primary storage for music and the other as primary for the pictures. Both are quite robust and probably the best i could have bought. And I try to take backups once a month for them both. Couple of months ago my laptop crashed and since then I haven’t been backing up my music/pictures. Yesterday my hard disc wouldn’t run and Windows indicated that it may have failed. 😦 I did not know what to do for a bit. Luckily, i tried a few more times and it worked. Thank god.

Coming to the point, I think in today’s age, each and every one of us has a lot of data that we will like to maintain – music, pictures, emails, files. Most of us wont spend too much money to backup and maintain that information. Which means that probably Windows will have to come up with some feature to do that. Live Mesh maybe. I love the concept of Live Mesh though I feel that, it should behave just like the files are on my machine and all the applications installed on my machine should be able to use the files like any other file physically stored on my machine. Hopefully that will be possible.

If not Mesh, then I think there should be someone/something else that lets me backup my data. I see this to become huge in the next few years, since all of us are having more and more data (which in turn needs to be backed up).

Hopefully – there soon enough, nobody will ever lose a song, delete a picture accidentally, nor any document.
