Widespread Panic, Moore Theater – Seattle

Jimmy Herring is one of my favorite guitar players. And hence I dont want to miss any chance to see him play. Widespread Panic played at the Moore Theater and what a show it was. Oh my god! Jimmy was phenomenal, right from the word go. Wish they played here more often, or at least I get to see The Ringers or ARU sometime soon…

Harborview Hospital

9th and James

Mark Lanegan – Harborview Hospital:
I walked by harborview hospital
I heard the agnus dei
Oh sister of mercy
I’ve been gone too long to say
And all around this place i was a sad disgrace

They’re singing, they’re singing
Away up on the hill
They’re building, they’re building
A mystical union, beautiful and still
But down here in the dirt they’ll say it doesn’t hurt

The devil’s ascended
Upon some crystal wings
In the citadel lightning
Splits a cloud of butterflies and fiends
And with a vacant stare i’ll leave a flower there

They’re riding, they’re riding
A hellhound down the hill
They’re sinking, they’re sinking
Into the ocean, beautiful and still
And yet it’s hard to leave in wealth or poverty

I walked by harborview hospital
And stopped at Ninth and James

Oh sister of mercy
I’ve been down too far to say
Are they supposed to be as sick as you and me?

The Essential Coffee in America

I stumbled on this link that talks about the essential coffee shops in America. Happy to see three Seattle coffee shops on that list. We love coffee here and I love me some coffee too.

Vivace is my favorite coffee shop in the area. I love Victorola and Milstead too. I would have put Ada’s up in that list as well – maybe since its a bookstore, they got left out. From Portland, I would definitely put Behind the Museum cafe on that list. Its crazy how consistently awesome they are! Public Domain has some amazing coffee but sometimes they are a hit-or-miss. Coava is another awesome place that serves great coffee!

I keep posting picture reviews of the coffee places I visit here.

Destroyer, Triple Door – Seattle

I love Destroyer. I love Dan Bejar’s singing, lyrics and compositions. Until yesterday, I had always seen him with his band. This was the first time I saw him solo (and acoustic). It was just amazing. Can believe that all those songs can sound even more beautiful when stripped down, acoustic. I highly recommend Kaputt, if you are new to Destroyer.

Valley Maker was the opening act. Enjoyed their show as well. Gotta listen to more of their stuff.

This was the first time that I attended the Seattle Rock Lottery. The concept is simple – they get a group of musicians together (25 in this case) and split them to form a new band (5 bands in this case). They play a concert in about 12 hours of their existence. They are expected to come up with 3-5 songs, of which only one can be a cover. Honestly, these bands sounded WAY better than a lot of regular fulltime bands! Everybody on stage seemed to be having a lot of fun. I reached when the second band was on stage (I missed Tendermess).

If I had to pick one band, it will be Judge Jordy Featuring The Roots. Their sound was too rich. With lap steel, horns, etc they sounded amazing! The close second for me was Ego Chavez. Daniel Blue was awesome! I am digging Motopony a lot too. Avtar Crowder laid a cool baseline on one of their songs. Mystic Spiral was awesome too. Trey Gunn was like a wizard and Stacy Peck kept the groove tight. I loved the vocal layer added by Jeppa Hall with Chillum Dafoe. Thomas Hunter rocked! Hard to believe that such cool stuff got created in 12 hours!

Tendermess:
Bill Patton (Bill Patton and the Credentials, Low Hums)
Scott Teske (Seattle Rock Orchestra)
Rob Witmer (“Awesome”, The Love Markets)
Mitch Leffler (Zebra Hunt)
Hollis Wong-Wear (The FLVR Blue)

Chillum Dafoe:
Thomas Hunter (The Heavy, White China Gold) – Guitar, Vocals
Jonah Bergman (Schoolyard Heroes, Trash Fire) – Base
Heather Thomas (Susy Sun, Tess Henley, Justin Froese) – Drums
J Battle (Gran Rapids) – Beats
Jeppa Hall (Queen Shmooquan, Goatgirl) – Vocals

Ego Chavez:
Cameron Elliott (No Grave, Mongrel Blood) – Guitar
Daniel Blue (Motopony) – Vocals
TV Coahran (Popular Shapes, Gazebos)  – Guitar
Avtar Crowder (Atomic Bride) – Base
Jacob Evans (Gems, The Soft Hills, St Kilda) – Drums

Judge Jordy Featuring The Roots:
Kimo Muraki (Tiny Messengers, Surrealized) – Guitars, Lap Steel Guitar
Matt Gervais (Mikey and Matty, Curtains For You) – Vocals, Guitar
Jon Stone (Hyperlung) – Guitars (not sure if i got this name right)
Ahamefule J. Oluo (Industrial Revelation, Hey Marseilles) – Horns, etc
Andrew King (XVIII Eyes, Dustmoth, Crypts) – Drums

Mystic Spiral:
Ajax Wood-Storm (Ardent Vein) – Keys
Trey Gunn (King Crimson, TU) – Chapman Stick
Stacy Peck (Pony Time, Childbirth) – Drums
Shaprece Renee (Shaprece) – Vocals
Shenandoah Davis (Shenandoah Davis) – Keys, Vocals

Missionary Position, Highway 99 Blues Club – Seattle

Missionary Position is a Seattle/Tacoma band starring Jeff Angell (guitar/vocals), Ben Anderson (keys) and Michael Alex (drums). They play here pretty often and I have been wanting to see them out for a long time now. Dont pay too much attention to the cheesy band name. Apparently, they got the name from the club they used to play at every week where the night was promoted as “Missionary Position”.

Man, these guys are awesome! The music is bluesy and groovy. Although I was hearing a lot of these songs for the first time, it felt as if I knew them all. I mean this in a very nice way. You just get hooked onto the songs. Strangely, some songs reminded me of the Stone Temple Pilots.

Apparently, as per Jeff this show was a little subdued by their standards, as he was nursing a torn finger. Yet, he did pick his guitar on quite a few songs. I will still say that the band sounded awesome and complete. I cannot wait for Jeff to recover and see these guys at their 100%.

They have two albums and have their third ready to be released soon. Both these albums are solid! You should give these guys a listen if you havent done that already. You wont be disappointed. Also, checkout Walking Papers, if you haven’t.

Moist eyes

I often feel that music is a very spiritual experience to me. As funny as it my sound, for an emotional person like me, its often like meditating. I often find myself with moist eyes when I experience something amazing. By now, I have had a few moments like that. Each of these deserve a blog post. I will try to do that and tag it with “moist eyes”. =)

Bill Frisell reuniting with his guitar!

Co-incidentally, I saw Bill the same day (and the previous night) he reunited with his guitar. He narrated a short story of how he felt reuniting with his guitar. Read about it here:
