Dark Star Orchestra, Showbox at the Market – Seattle

There are some bands that you want to see, can see and yet miss them. Dark Star Orchestra is one of them for me. I have decided to see them so many times and yet never happened before.

Finally on 4/20 i got to see the Orchestra. What a great show they put up and its always fun to see a jam band. Loved Jeff Mattson and Skip Vangelas’s playing. Great show!

Also, ran into Mike McCready walking on the street (kind-of things that happen in Seattle) and had a fun conversation with Barrett and Van! For the record, I love Barrett Martin! What a player!

Simon Townshend, Triple Door – Seattle

I went into this show knowing very little about the guy besides the fact that his brother is Pete. =) Being a huge The Who fan, I decided to take my change. Bombay Bicycle Club was playing at the same time at Neptune, one of my fav bands at an awesome venue. I decided on this as I have seen BBC multiple times before.

Townshend played acoustic guitars and sang to em. He was rocking and entertained the crowd very well. I felt his singing had similarities with his brothers. I guess its very hard to not make these comparisons. His guitar playing was good. He had one of his friend help him on two songs. I’ve seen that friend of his on a lot of occasions and he never disappoints. =)

Slow Music, Triple Door – Seattle

Slow Music is a super group featuring Peter Buck, Fred Chalenor, Matt Chamberlain, Robert Fripp, Bill Rieflin and Hector Zazou. You cannot really go wrong with a bunch of folks like that. Probably these guys individually will be able to sell out a show.

Slow Music is experimental improv music. I expected it to center around guitar a little more, with Peter Buck and Robert Fripp on the stage. Unfortunately for me, the sound was more percussive than string. The music was roomy, interesting and very in the moment. Kinda reminded me of some of the obscure Pink Floyd songs. I really wish the guitar players added more to the sound though.

Queens of the Stone Age, Keller Auditorium, Portland OR

Queens of the Stone Age are probably the greatest rock band in the world right now. Josh Homme is one of the best front man any band can wish for. This was my fifth time I saw them and like all other times, they did not disappoint. Apparently, Portland is Josh’s favorite city and he enjoys being there. Nice to see Nick Oliveri join the band for “I Feel Like a Millionaire”.

Setlist:
Feel Good Hit of the Summer
No One Knows
Avon
My God Is the Sun
Burn the Witch
Smooth Sailing
…Like Clockwork
If I Had a Tail
In My Head
Little Sister
Kalopsia
I Appear Missing
I Sat by the Ocean
Make It Wit Chu
Sick, Sick, Sick
3’s & 7’s
Better Living Through Chemistry
Go With the Flow

Encore:

John Scofield’s Uberjam and Skerik’s Bandalabra – Star Theater, Portland OR

This was my first John Scofield show. I was so impressed with John Scofields playing. Reminded me of Warren Haynes and Gov’t Mule a lot. Fun show and so glad I attended.

Skerik? I LOVE Skerik. There is never a bad show when he is on stage. One of my favorite musicians. I have lost count of how many times and how many different bands I have seen him with. This time it was with Bandalabra. Amazing stuff.

Archives…

How I wish I had kept a trail of all the shows I have attended! Maybe saved a picture or two. I usually add the shows to my Calendar but I haven’t been very disciplined with that. Starting now, I want to fix that. Let me see how well that goes…

The Boxer – Simon and Garfunkel

Its only just started!

I am just a poor boy
Though my story’s seldom told
I have squandered my resistance
For a pocket full of mumbles such are promises
All lies and jests
Still a man hears what he wants to hear
And disregards the rest

When I left my home and my family
I was no more than a boy
In the company of strangers
In the quiet of the railway station running scared
Laying low, seeking out the poorer quarters
Where the ragged people go
Looking for the places only they would know

Lie la lie …

Asking only workman’s wages
I come looking for a job
But I get no offers,
Just a come-on from the whores on Seventh Avenue
I do declare, there were times when I was so lonesome
I took some comfort there

Lie la lie …

Then I’m laying out my winter clothes
And wishing I was gone
Going home
Where the New York City winters aren’t bleeding me
Bleeding me, going home

In the clearing stands a boxer
And a fighter by his trade
And he carries the reminders
Of every glove that layed him down
Or cut him till he cried out
In his anger and his shame
“I am leaving, I am leaving”
But the fighter still remains

Lie la lie …
